KB-7422: How to reset password for Active Directory user on Mac when Smart Card login is required

Question:

Is it possible for a user to change their Active Directory password on a Mac when login using Smart Card is required? This process fails when using "Users and Groups" to reset after the policy is enforced.



Answer:

Depending on the Environment, Smart Card Users are able to reset their own Active Directory passwords on a Mac, but not in the typical method of using System Preferences > Users and Groups. By design, the password is not used for log in when Smart Card is enforced, nor allowed and attempts to reset using Users and Groups are expected to fail.

As a workaround, users can perform the following steps to reset AD passwords on a Mac computer. 

Note: This process may still be blocked in various ways by the Corporate Security policy. If password change using adpasswd fails, contact your Active Directory Group policy Administrator to review group policy that may prevent the User from resetting their own Active Directory password. 


Reset password using Mac Terminal:

1. On the Mac computer, launch Terminal and run the following command:

       adpasswd

2. The User will be prompted for their existing password
3. Next, the User should enter their new password, and then confirm to apply the changes.
