KB-7038: Why virtual machine is not recommended for Centrify Reporting Service?

Centrify DirectControl ,

29 June,16 at 03:56 PM

Applies To:

All versions of Centrify DirectControl Reporting Service.

Question:

According to the documentation  Centrify Server Suite -  Report Administrator’s Guide, it is mentioned for production deployments that Centrify recommends not to use virtual machines.
What is the reasoning behind this recommendation?

Answer:

In general, Centrify Reporting Service works well in virtual machines, including the case of installing SQL Server in a virtual machine. However, in large enterprise environment (e.g., when more than 100,000 users are enabled for Centrify DirectControl), the SQL queries used for generating reports may have significant CPU, memory and I/O requirement. In such scenario, Centrify recommends the use of physical machines for SQL Server to allow for better tuning of SQL Server without impacts to other systems. Alternatively, customers can still install/run SQL Server in a virtual machine. In such cases, Centrify recommends the customers to follow the guidelines provided by the virtualization vendors:
