Tips for finding Knowledge Articles

  • - Enter just a few key words related to your question or problem
  • - Add Key words to refine your search as necessary
  • - Do not use punctuation
  • - Search is not case sensitive
  • - Avoid non-descriptive filler words like "how", "the", "what", etc.
  • - If you do not find what you are looking for the first time,reduce the number of key words you enter and try searching again.
  • - Minimum supported Internet Explorer version is IE9

KB-5981: Enable Active Directory Synchronization through PowerShell commands

The wizard for enabling Active Directory synchronization is not the one seen in KB-5053

The wizard only allows configuration on Azure Active Directory Connect and not to administrative pages to activate Activity Directory Synchronization:

Use PowerShell as a workaround for now.

Please install the Windows Azure AD Module for Windows PowerShell from the link below:

First check the setting to see if it is necessary for the next step by running this command:

If it is set to false, run the PowerShell command below to activate AD Sync:
Set-MsolDirSyncEnabled –EnableDirSync $true

After running the command to activate AD Sync, run the PowerShell Command below to confirm that AD Sync is now activated:


If set to true, run the following command to verify that the status is enabled, and AD Sync is activated:


Note: Per Microsoft it may take up to 24 hours for AD Sync to activate.
