KB-5906: Unable to set ssh terminal idle timeout

Centrify DirectControl ,

31 October,15 at 12:28 AM

Problem:

SSH terminal connections do not appear to time out even though ClientAliveInterval and ClientAliveCountMax  parameters are set in the sshd_config  file.

Background:

There is a known bug in OpenSSH  where if anything except "0" is used in the "ClientAliveCountMax" parameter the session will NOT time out.

Here is an external ( non Centrify) link with additional information:

ubuntu bug #296920  https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/openssh/+bug/296920

Resolution:

Timeout should be set using the "ClientAliveInterval" parameter in seconds.
"ClientAliveCountMax" should be set to "0" If anything except "0" is used in the "ClientAliveCountMax" parameter the session will NOT time out.

ClientAliveInterval 60   ( the number of seconds you want the session to stay alive with no interaction)
ClientAliveCountMax 0 ( set this to 0. Anything other than 0 and the session will not time out)
