KB-2533: Login banners will not apply on OS X 10.8 and higher when there is an apostrophe in the text.

Centrify Identity Service, Mac Edition ,

12 April,16 at 11:07 AM

Applies to: Centrify DirectControl 5.0.3 and higher on Mac OS X 10.8 and higher.

Problem:

Enabling the "Set login window settings" group policy at:

  / Computer Configuration / Centrify Settings / Mac OS X Settings / Accounts /

..and setting the login banner text to (example text): "Welcome to Centrify's Network" will display the text correct on OS X 10.7 and below.
However OS X 10.8 and higher will show no change.

Changing the banner to: "Welcome to the Centrify Network" will display correctly for all versions of OS X.

Cause:

The apostrophe ( ' ) character is stopping the banner text from being correctly set. This can also prevent additional computer-based policy options from applying to the system.

OS X 10.8 no longer reads settings from a plist file, so the defaults command is used instead to modify the plist (traditionally, PerlObjCBridge is used).

Unfortunately this causes any string value to break the command if there is an apostrophe present:
  • /usr/bin/defaults write /Library/Preferences/com.apple.loginwindow LoginwindowText -string 'Welcome to Centrify's network'

Workaround:

The only workaround is to use text which does not use the ' character.

Alternatively, use the following method to create a policy popup message at the login screen:
Resolution:

This is targeted to be fixed in a future version of Centrify Suite
