KB-1988: Unable to open Office 2011 files from a network share on Mac OS X

Centrify Identity Service, Mac Edition ,

12 April,16 at 10:57 AM

Applies to: All versions of Centrify DirectControl on Mac OS X

Problem:

Microsoft Office 2011 files cannot be opened from a network share.

This affects all Centrify users and only happens when the network share is mounted via the sample automount script found in the Centrify Suite installation.

Cause:

When using the sample automount script, it mounts the share onto the mountpoint:

  /Volumes/username/windows_home

This appears to be too complex for Office 2011 to comprehend.

When the share is mounted on a less complex path name, /Volumes/Office/ such as Office 2011 is able to use the path.

Note: This is a bug within Office itself and is not Centrify-related.

Workaround:

Do not use the sample automount script for mounting the network shares with Office files.

Resolution:

Use either the standard Automount Settings group policies, or adjust the script so that it can mount on a simpler mount point.
