Question:
When you browse the Windows Network Neighborhood properties, you often find the hostname with a descriptive string “Samba 3.3.9-cdc-4-3.1-130" along with the hostname. How can you change or remove the description?
Answer:
You need to modify the /etc/samba/smb.conf file, in the Global section, add in:
Server String = hostname or something descriptive to your environment
Save it, and restart Samba services. Browsing the Network Neighborhood properties again will show the descriptive string you entered in the smb.conf.
