KB-1261: Mac login banner size limitations.

Mac & PC Management Service ,

12 April,16 at 11:12 AM

Applies to: All versions of Centrify DirectControl on Mac OS X

A login banner with a lot of text is being applied via the following group policy:

Computer Configuration / Centrify Settings / Mac OS X Settings / Accounts / "Set login window settings"

If the text is too long, then the banner text may get truncated at the login screen for OS X 10.7 and below.

OS X 10.8 and above is able to display the full text, but users will need to manually scroll to see the complete text.

Is it possible to have the login screen display long login banners without the words being truncated or the users needing to scroll?

This is an OS X limitation and there are two possible workarounds:

Option 1:

Line breaks can be added into the text with the use of the \n escape character to insert newline carriage returns.

For example, entering the following text into the GP:

Welcome to Centrify\n\nThis computer is property of Centrify Corporation

..will display on the login screen as:

Welcome to Centrify

This Computer is property of Centrify Corporation

Option 2:

Use the policy banner method instead which also has the additional benefit of allowing extra formatting options:

  • KB-2173: How to create a scrollable policy banner on OS X 10.7 and higher
For OS X 10.8, banners that contain an apostrophe (') in the text cannot be used:
  • KB-2533: Login banners will not apply on OS X 10.8 when there is an apostrophe in the text.
Keywords: banner message wrapping disclaimer text field not long enough
