[HOWTO] Set up RDS

Privileged Access Service ,

18 December,19 at 11:10 PM

This is an article that explains how to set up RDS in a basic environment. In this case, one server takes all the roles (RDS-CONNECTION-BROKER, RDS-RD-SERVER, etc.). YOU MUST SIGN IN AS A DOMAIN ADMINISTRATOR TO SET IT UP. You will also need to configure the firewall to allow Windows PowerShell Remoting ( PowerShell Remoting use port 5985 and 5986 for connections over HTTP and HTTPS).

To set it up:
  • Open up Server Manager
  • Select the server
  • Select the Installation type (Remote Desktop Services Installation)

  • Select the Deployment type

  • Select the Session type as Session-based

  • You will need to select each role for the computer (RDS-CONNECTION-BROKER, RDS-WEB-ACCESS, RD-SESSION-HOST)
    • Since this is a demonstration, this server will be an all in one
  •  Assign the computer to all of the roles

  • Select to Restart the System

If you get this error:

You will need to open up your firewall or run these commands in PoSH (as an Admin):

To test the firewall, go to another computer on the domain and run:

New-PSSession -ComputerName <Computernameofsystem>

If that passes then run these commands:

Set-Item WSMan:\localhost\Service\EnableCompatibilityHttpListener -Value true

Set-Item WSMan:\localhost\Service\EnableCompatibilityHttpsListener -Value true

Set-Item WSMan:\localhost\Shell\MaxMemoryPerShellMB 1000

The System now has RDS set up and configured. It will only work unlicensed for 120 days.
